Q: I can’t audit computer running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
A: You need to enable remote administration. To do this:-
- Click start, and run.
- Type gpedit.msc into the open box and press enter.
- Under computer configuration expand the “Administrative Templates” folder.
- Expand the network folder.
- Expand the network connections folder.
- Expand the windows firewall folder
- If the computer is part of a domain click the Domain profile folder, otherwise click the Standard profile folder.
- Double click the Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception.
- Click enabled and click OK.
Q: I can’t audit a PC running Windows Server 2003.
A: In Windows 2003 WMI is an optional component. To install WMI:-
- Open the control panel (click Start, and Control Panel)
- Click Add Remove programs, and click Add/Remove windows components.
- Select the Management and Monitoring Tools check box, then click Details. Select the WMI Windows Installer Provider check box, and click OK.
Q: I can’t I audit PC’s running Windows 95/98?
A: Network Inventory Explorer uses WMI technology which is not included with windows 95/98 as standard. You will need to install the WMI core, which can be downloaded using the links below.
Q: I installed the WMI core on machines running Windows 95/98 but still can’t audit them?
A: Although the windows management service (winmgmt.exe) start’s automatically on Windows 2000/XP/2003 and Vista it must be manually configured to start when using Windows 95/98. To do this follow these steps.
- Enable DICOM (set HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OLE\EnableDCOM to "Y")
- Enable remote connections (set HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OLE\EnableRemoteConnect to "Y")
- Set HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WBEM\CIMOM\AutoStartWin9x to 2
- Add link to the Winmgmt.exe file into the Startup directory. Winmgmt is located in the \Windows\WBEM directory
- Under the key \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\wbem\cimom set EnableAnonConnections to "1"
Q: Is Network Inventory Explorer spyware?
A: Network Inventory Explorer is not spyware and never sends any information to us or any third party
